Legacy of the "Eternal President"
After Kim Il Sung, North Korea's founder, passed away in 1994, the presidency remained vacant. The late leader was posthumously titled the "Eternal President," while his son, Kim Jong-Un, ascended to power in 2011.
Little is known about Kim Jong-Un's early life. Born between 1982 and 1984, he was reportedly educated in Switzerland. Upon his father's death, he inherited the leadership of North Korea and the Korean Workers' Party.
Over the past decade, Kim Jong-Un has pursued both economic development and nuclear weapons programs. He has met with world leaders such as former U.S. President Donald Trump and current South Korean President Moon Jae-in to discuss denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula.
However, North Korea's human rights record remains a concern for the international community. Defectors from the country report widespread political repression, labor camps, and other abuses.
As Kim Jong-Un enters his second decade of leadership, his regime faces continued challenges both domestically and internationally. The COVID-19 pandemic and international sanctions have put a strain on North Korea's economy.
Despite these challenges, Kim Jong-Un remains firmly in control of the country. His leadership style has been characterized by a blend of propaganda, repression, and economic reform.
